Nursing in our ICU

Boasting state-of-the-art facilities the Alfred ICU is one of the largest and certainly has the most complex case mix in the country.  Both medical and surgical patients are cared for in our ICU, including patients requiring ECMO, haemofiltration, complex ventilation, organ donation, haematological illness, and neurosurgical care.

Additionally, the Alfred is the state service for Burns, Trauma, Hyperbaric, Heart and Lung Transplantation and Paediatric lung transplantation. Two thirds of our ICU patients are state Service patients.  In total, the unit employs more than 400 nurses to care for more than 250 admissions per month with a mix of ICU and HDU patients.

Our ICU has four, co-located clinical units (called ‘pods’) providing care for Cardiothoracic, Surgical, General and Trauma patients.  Patients in each pod are supported by multidisciplinary teams including 24-hour medical & nursing support.

The Alfred ICU has an innovative nursing leadership team. Within each pod, you will be supported in caring for your patient on each shift by an Associate Nurse Manager (ANM),  and a Clinical Nurse Educator.  To ensure the best outcomes for our patients there  are  Clinical Nurse Consultants, who are clinical experts in a speciality.

Additional support staff who assist you with patient care and co-ordinate cleaning within the unit.  Patient admissions and discharges are coordinated by the Patient Access Nurse (PAN).

Our expectation is that you will have a commitment to ongoing professional development.  Your ongoing professional development within the unit will be supported by 1:1 beside teaching, specialized study days, self-directed learning packages, bedside teaching and tutorials, annual competency assessments, and in-services.

All of our nurses are qualified Critical Care Nurses or working towards post graduate qualifications through our educational partnership with La Trobe University and Deakin University.

Our ICU is designed to make your day-to-day work that little bit easier. You can just concentrate on what matters most - your patients.
