Alfred ICU participates in The Alfred Hospital Trans-Institutional Exchange with Longgang Central Hospital, Shenzen China.

The relationship between the Alfred and Longgang province is in the Shenzen region of Guandong province in Southern China began in September 2009, when a Memorandum of Understanding between Alfred Health and Longgang District People’s Hospital, Shenzhen, China was signed to commence a 2 year training and exchange program between both hospitals.  The Longgang Municipal Government, Department of Health and Longgang District People’s Hospital wished to establish a trauma centre at Longgang District People’s Hospital in Shenzhen in order to provide better trauma health services and in preparation for the 26th World University Games which were to take place in Shenzhen from the 12th – 23rd August 2011.  The Shenzhen Government asked The Alfred to act in an advisory capacity and to assist in training their staff in trauma care.

This initially involved the Alfred's Emergency Department and Trauma Service, and subsequently included the Alfred ICU.

In February 2011, Prof Carlos Scheinkestel was invited there to advise on ICU organization, management and design.  His work was primarily at The Longgang District People's Hospital, but he was also invited to attend the Longgang Central Hospital.  Prof Scheinkestel was delighted to be the recipient of extra-ordinary hospitality and he was made to feel extremely welcome by his hosts.

The Longgang Central Hospital (LCH) is now being expanded to a 2000 bed hospital with an aim to establish the LCH as a premier teaching hospital for the Shenzen region. The Alfred Hospital has undertaken a program to assist LCH to develop emergency and trauma care, neurosurgical care and critical care. This collaborative program has led to further visits by a number of Alfred consultants to LCH to assist in design and development of their clinical programs as well as provide on-site clinical education.

The Alfred ICU was again invited to participate in this program and in September 2013 Dr Irma Bilgami, Dr Steve McGloughlin and RN Angela Liu visited LCH. During their visits the Alfred consultants were able to attend daily ward rounds as well as providing daily education sessions to the LCH ICU consultants, junior medical staff and nursing team. The Alfred team were also invited to participate in discussion about the implementation of clinical programs and guidelines for the ICU and the LCH.

Dr McGloughlin were also fortunate to be able to present at the Shenzen regional critical care association meeting which included discussion on future links between the Alfred hospital intensive care and the Shenzen region.  The Alfred team were treated to wonderful hospitality by the LCH intensive care team led by their director Dr Feng Cao.
