Welcome to the Alfred Intensive Care Team!

The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is a state of the art 45 bed unit that treats approximately 3000 patients per year. We are a busy quaternary teaching unit and provide state wide services for:

  • Heart & lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation)

  • Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)

  • Burns

  • Hyperbaric medicine

  • Trauma including neurosurgery

  • HIV

  • Bone marrow transplantation

In addition, most other surgical and medical subspecialties are represented in the case-mix.

Our dynamic ICU teams also provide care and support outside the ICU:

  • Medical Emergency Team (MET) for all inpatients at the Alfred

  • Tracheostomy ward round

  • Acquired brain injury unit (Caulfield)

  • Mildura base hospital

We have junior and senior registrar positions available in intensive care, general medicine and respiratory medicine, anaesthesia, hyperbaric medicine and a paediatric intensive care rotation to Royal Children’s Hospital. Fellow positions include echocardiography, ECMO, research, trauma, education and simulation.

There is an extensive consultant led education program including dedicated protected weekly teaching sessions for junior and senior registrars. This program includes weekly:

  • Journal club

  • In-situ simulation training* including MET response

  • Bronchoscopy training

  • ECMO and mechanical cardiac support*

  • Critical care echocardiography and ultrasonography*

  • Clinical leadership*

  • CICM Part I and II exam preparation

* These training programs enable trainees to gain formal certification like the Certificate of Clinician Performed Ultrasonography (CCPU), Alfred Clinical Leadership Certificate, ECMO Certificate and Alfred Clinical Education and Simulation Certificate.

CICM trainees can also complete their Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FCU) requirements for the college.
