Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for the inaugural Catalyst event. The only thing better than our outstanding speakers was the highly engaged, interprofessional audience representing every corner of critical care.
Resuscitation of the Critically Ill — Morning Theme
We kicked off with a series of high‑impact trigger talks:
- Brian Burns shared cutting‑edge insights into resuscitation, drawing on the NSW Code Crimson experience to show how knowledge, skills, mindset, and systems align to save lives.
- Shaun Greene, in his talk Don’t Die Not Knowing, reframed how we think about critically ill toxicology patients and their time‑critical management.
- Julia Coull explored the shift toward prehospital ECPR, emphasising the teamwork and system design required to bring advanced critical care to the patient.
With heads full of new ideas, participants moved into action through three hands‑on workshops:
- Critical Care Toxicology Deep Dive (Shaun Greene joined by his colleague, expert toxicologist Zeff Koutsogiannis)
- Prehospital ECPR Simulation
- Mini‑Resuscitology Case Workshop
Peak Performance in Critical Care — Afternoon Theme
The afternoon shifted gears to performance, mindset, and culture:
- Tom Evens opened with a memorable rock–paper–scissors knockout tournament (congratulations to Alfred ICU nurse Luz Santa Maria, our undefeated champion!) as a springboard into mindset and performance under pressure.
- Victoria Brazil and Eve Purdy (the dynamic duo from the Gold Coast) delivered high impact, thought provoking talks on making teams work and creating culture.
Again, these ideas became action through interactive workshops led by our keynote speaker, with Neil Orford joining to share his expert perspectives on creating culture. At the end of the day, the word on the street was remarkably consistent: participants felt energised, inspired, and keen to take new ideas to the workplace, all while suffering severe FOMO after hearing about the other sessions!
