Celebrating 60 years of ICU at The Alfred

02 July 2025

On Thursday 19 June, we proudly celebrated 60 incredible years of Intensive Care at The Alfred, bringing together past and present ICU staff for a truly memorable event.

The event was a special opportunity to look back on the extraordinary journey and transformation of critical care at The Alfred, as past and present staff shared reflections on their experiences in our ICU.From heartfelt stories to groundbreaking milestones, we heard from The Nurses League, VECMOS (Victorian Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Service), Allied Health, and Hyperbaric Services, each sharing the innovations and moments that have defined six decades of excellence in ICU care.

The celebration featured guest speakers, including Dr Gillian Cameron and Pru Weber who shared firsthand insights from their time working in the Alfred ICU during the late 1960s, as well as Andrew Ross and Kerry Prior on their experiences in the ICU.

Alfred Health intensivist Dr Julia Coull hosted a panel discussion featuring Ged Williams, Vincent Pellegrino, Fiona Tweedley, Sharon Hade, and Scott Bradley, alongside former ICU patient Ashley Cook-Howlett.The panel provided a meaningful dialogue about the challenges, advancements, and human stories that define the ICU experience.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped bring this incredible evening to life, as we celebrated 60 years of ICU excellence at The Alfred.
