At The Alfred Intensive Care Academic Centre, research is at the core of how we improve care for the critically ill. Our commitment to evidence-based innovation ensures that the treatments we deliver are grounded in world-leading science.
Our research team is internationally recognised for their work in Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), trauma, burns, and cardiology.
Between 2022 and 2024, our researchers:
• Published over 350 studies in peer-reviewed journals
• Received 6 national and international awards
• Secured more than $35 million in competitive grant funding
Our allied health team also plays a critical role, with physiotherapists, dietitians, and pharmacists contributing to a growing body of multidisciplinary research.
The Alfred ICU Clinical Trials team provides expert support in protocol development, ethics and governance, data collection, and implementation — and works tirelessly to ensure that research is translated into real-world care.
We’re proud to contribute to the Alfred Research Alliance, the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct, and ANZICS — advancing science and saving lives through collaboration and purpose.
Most importantly, we thank every patient and family who has taken part in a clinical trial. Your generosity and courage help shape the future of critical care.
