Sabbatical/Honorary positions (for Australian applicants only)

An honorary position is an unpaid hospital appointment that allows visitors to participate in patient care, undertake research etc. that is not allowed under the rules of an observership. 

The length of the visit varies between 3 to 6 months. There is limited opportunity over the December /January period.

Eligibility criteria

Sabbatical/Honorary positions are only open to applicants who are:  

  • Consultants.
  • medically trained and eligible for registration within Australia.

For ECMO applicants: you must have recently completed or plan to complete the Alfred/VECMOS ECMO Course in the early part of your visit.

Priority

For ECMO sabbatical, priority will be given to those who work in an established ECMO service or plan to commence an ECMO service that is deemed necessary and appropriate for the local community. 
 

Applying for Sabbatical/Honorary positions

To apply you must complete the application form and upload the following documents:

  • A letter of objective with intended dates of visit.
  • Your Curriculum Vitae.  
  • A letter of support from your Unit Director.
  • Proof of your AHPRA Registration

Upon ICU Committee approval, the Hospital Medical Workforce Department will contact you for additional documentation. This includes a copy of  AHPRA registration, copy of an ID, immunisation questionnaire, police check, and two referee names.
