For Patients

The Alfred ICU cares for some of the sickest people in Australia. Our goal is to provide them the best available care, based on up-to-date scientific evidence; at the same time we are constantly considering how our care might be improved, through rigorous clinical research

You or your loved one might be invited to participate in research studies. These studies aim to improve how we treat a variety of critical illnesses, from major injuries to severe infections and organ failures. We are also interested to better understand how we can help patients recover after an ICU stay.

We conduct research on new treatments, on ways to optimise the use of existing treatments, and how to support families during difficult times. In addition to Monash University, we collaborate with hospitals and institutions around the world to share knowledge and accelerate learning. It is mandatory that all studies are reviewed and approved by ethics committees before commencement. You are under no obligation to participate, and are free to ask questions about the research at any time.

Our goal is clear: to achieve the best possible outcomes for all our patients, now and into the future.
