As prominent figures in the intensive care medicine realm, the Alfred ICU Investigators released 195 peer-reviewed papers in 2023 and attained over $33 million in competitive grant funding.

A significant portion of this funding was granted by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). Notably, Professor Andrew Udy (Head of ICU Research) received a $5 million grant to establish a National Critical Care Research Platform to enhance sepsis care nationwide.

Our researchers' dedication has been recognised both nationally and internationally. Our ‘TEAM’ trial won the ‘Trial of the Year’ award at the ACTA awards in November 2023. Moreover, it received the Alfred Research Alliance Prize for Clinical Research. Carol Hodgson, the lead author, received the American Thoracic Society (ATS) Assembly on Critical Care Mid-Career Award for her outstanding work.

TEAM is an an NHMRC-funded Phase III, multicentre, multinational randomised controlled trial conducted at 49 centers across 6 countries. The Trial has been crucial in shaping the Australian guideline for rehabilitation and mobilisation in intensive care. Notably, significant savings in healthcare costs are now being realised annually in Australia and New Zealand as a result of this groundbreaking research.

Additional award recipients comprise Chris Nickson (ICU Deputy Director of Education), who won the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) 2023 award for exceptional accomplishments in Health Professional Education across Australasia, New Zealand, and globally. Emma Ridley, Senior ICU Dietitian won the Monash University School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Early Career Research Excellence Award.
